Giffords Come to Visit Day 2

I asked my parents before they came what they wanted to see and one of their responses was glow worms! We had a few options; one was Waitomo but 3 hours away & pricey and Waipu was a little too adventurous for my parents. So we settled on the Karangahake Gorge Rail Trail area. We had done a portion of this trail on our brutal bike ride a few months back. We had read that the old rail tunnels had some glow worms in them so we decided to check them out. We made the 2 hour trek to the Coromandel area and ate a picnic lunch at an old mine. Then we made the walk along The Windows Walk trail. It was a beautiful sunny day and the breeze was nice as we walked through the canyon. The river was flowing below us and we could see the old railroad track on the other side. After passing a freaky big spider, we crossed the swing bridge to get to the tunnel. We had to turn off our lights so we could make out the glow worms. There weren't many, but enough to impress my parents. Glow worms are just so cool…I'll never get tired of seeing them. It's amazing to see God's awesome creations.

We stopped at the river at the end of the trail and did some good rock skipping. It's against the rules to pass a river and not throw a few rocks in ;)  Cody and the kids are pros….I, however, still have not perfected my rock skipping skills...

After a fun walk, we got back in the car and headed to find a beach. After a windy drive through rolling green hills, we ended at Whiritoa beach. The kids loved the small waves and digging in the sand while the adults enjoyed the beautiful view and watching the fun the kids were having. We packed along our camp stove and made quesadillas for dinner. We ate right on the edge of the beach enjoying a nice warm meal on a windy day. You can't beat a better view!
