It took A LOT of work to get to our departure day! We had to be wise with what we packed into 18 suitcases because we would be living out of them for over 2 months in New Zealand. We included clothing, toys, books, cookware & utensils, pillows, towels, sleeping bags, toiletries, beach gear, basically as much as we could without packing our kitchen sink =) The best way for us to get to LAX with 6 people & 18 suitcases was to hire a shuttle. It was heart wrenching leaving my family behind! But we had had so many moments of confirmation that this was the right thing for our family to do so we knew it would all be worth it.
Everything fit in the shuttle and we arrived in record time. I didn't want to have to come this far and stress and rush at the airport so we planned to be there with plenty of time. Luckily we planned well because we had a lot of shifting to do! We had weighed our suitcases over and over at my parents' house before we left and all of them were under 50 lbs. However, we didn't get the memo that the carryon luggage had to be under 15 lbs! Luckily, we had room to spare in the larger pieces of luggage and we were able to shift things around until we were in the clear. I'm sure we were quite the scene! Thankfully we were there so early that it wasn't busy and everything turned out just fine.

Our little train of children and their suitcases wove in and out of the halls of the airport, through security, and to our gate. The kids did great keeping themselves entertained while we waited for our flight. Gavin, Trevor, and Reese had never been on an airplane before so they were all so excited for their first flight…across the world! It was Trevor's 6th birthday so we made sure to celebrate it on Saturday but had to do the traditional birthday kiss sandwich to document his big day.
Our flight was 13 hours through the night. The kids slept perfectly and were glued to the games and movies the airline provided the rest of the time. We were all anxious and excited for our arrival in our new home!
